CHARISMA

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
Making a Village Center out of a thoroughfare

Arlington Heights shopping area straddles the intersection of Mass Ave and Park Ave (marked by "X"). It works as a village center with many Smart Growth attributes. The buildings are small in scale and oriented to pedestrians. This allows one to park on the street and walk to several destinations: Post Office, Bakery, dry cleaners, restaurants, and convenience stores.

Walgreen (above) is located outside the perimeter of the village center. Walgreen and similar auto-accessible land uses with large parking lots do not disrupt the scale, intimacy and pedestrian access which characterize the village center.

From this location, buses connect with the MBTA subway system.

Housing includes second floor apartments in commercial buildings and nearby single family houses.

The post office draws people to the area.
